I saw this image and when it was in teeny-form on my dashboard, I thought she was aiming a rifle. And that would have been AWESOME.

EDIT: Oh, warning for music on the OP's tumbler. What music, I have no idea, because I have sound off, but there is a little bar at the bottom that makes me suspect music.

OK. So now I am getting over the whiplash effect of social groups suddenly deciding that they don't want to stay in the neat little familiar boxes and AUGH THINGS CHANGING...

...Russian politics is influencing my social life. Truly, we are living in the global village.

ANYWAY. ACCESS POLL TIME PEOPLE. Fill this in if you are not seeing the content you expect, not expecting the content you see, not on the same things in DW and LJ and want to be, ARE on the same things in DW and LJ and don't want to be, or just want to make me happy by affirming your interest in my drivel.

Remember: a) I can not read your minds and I do not know stuff unless you tell me, and b) just because you told me something six months ago does not mean I still know it if you haven't reminded me since.

Filter poll time!

The locked content on this journal (which is most of it) is not locked to keep you out. Yes, I do mean you, even if I don't know you yet! It is locked to keep out webcrawlers, spambots, and faceless evil megacorporations; unless you are one of these you are very welcome; just let me know you're here & I'll happily grant access.

Likewise, the filter settings are not to keep you out either. They are instead to avoid spamming people's reading lists with things that don't interest them, because little fishes know some of my interests don't universally intersect with the others.

The poll!Collapse )

Book review: Rosemary and Rue, Seanan McGuire

8:30: I think I may have promised to write this review. I don't remember.

I don't remember because I have just finished reading a good book. This means I pretty much don't remember anything beyond my name & that it is a good idea to rearrange my face into affectionate-shapes when looking at that blonde guy wandering around the lounge rolling a cigarette.

Rosemary and Rue, Seanan McGuire, not spoileryCollapse )

I rarely tell people what to do. Usually I think that's their business, not mine, etc etc.

But in this case, what you really need to do, is (put that drink down now, Caro) go to this link. http://www.irrelevanz.de/ And laugh.

If, like my ex-step-granddad's acupuncturist, you can sense the relevant energies through your fingertips but speak no German (actually you'd need a lot of German to get the references, I think) then click on the appropriate flag and you get the translation.

(and anyone else who cares for a mincemeat recipe)

Under the cut is a scan of my mother's recipe for mincemeat. And a couple of other recipes too. (Apologies for the white space. It's late.) When she says peanut butter jars in the scribble, I think she means the 450g (er, about 18oz) ones. But it might not be.

Also (I guess this is obvious if you stop to think about it) all the measurements in ounces and such are imperial not US. We think the dry measures are the same, but the liquid ones aren't, so this should only be a problem if you ever want to try the other recipes on the page - we have 20 fl oz in a pint. *shrugs* Although I suppose the Canadians are more used to converting back and forth as I think they use the same system as the UK, so they can correct me if I'm wrong. Or you could just use the metric measures which at least are the same everywhere even if the numbers are always annoyingly large.

My grandmother remembers her mother making mincemeat with real meat; it was minced (ground) beef, apparently. This would have been in the 1930s, I believe. I suppose she made pies with it. (I don't think she remembers it particularly fondly, and as I might have mentioned, she's a bit forgetful). I still think sausagemeat might be nicer.

Home safe.

The Leicster ring-road, the Husbands' Bosworth 1-way system and the Welford Temporal Anomaly* safely negotiated.

Was a good day, actually.

Even if it did involve mutant parsnips:

A pointless ramble, you say? Fie on you, sir! This is no pointless ramble! It is, in fact, an extremely pointful ramble, in furtherance of a noble cause* - the further edification of one Thomas Somebody-or-other Esq, better known in his guise as illithidbix!

How astonishingly enlightened.

A terminally ill man believed to be the first in Britain to "marry" his partner in a civil partnership has died just one day after the ceremony [...] given special permission to go ahead before the normal 15-day waiting period.
